Nowadays, news has become a main source for people to gain the latest information, and the quick development of the Internet accelerates the effective spread of news. Thus,Netnews has become an important platform for people to access information in the world. In this process, news translation provides target readers with information of source texts in a timely and efficient manner, which meets their needs of cognition, study, and so on.Among it,the translation of English news into Chinese plays a significant role in various Chinese-Western communication activities. Therefore,a study on English-Chinese translation of news reports is necessary and significant.Judging from collected data relevant to this study,it is found that former scholars have largely made a discussion on English translation from different aspects starting from relevant theories of linguistics and translation studies. But so far, there has been little in-depth and systematic research into English translation from the Narrative Perspective. This thesis attempts to study on English-Chinese translation of news reports based on the Narrative Theory of Mona Baker. This theory exploits a new field of research for translation studies. It emphasizes"framing narratives",but not simply literally translating one language into another.Translation is viewed as a kind of narrative activity, which not only presents but also frames social realities. Thus, the theory provides the basic theoretical framework for this research. This thesis is composed of six chapters. The first chapter gives a general introduction mainly by expounding the research background, current research status at home and abroad, problems, purposes and significances of the research, research objects and methods as well as research contents. The second chapter introduces the Narrative Theory and its relationship with translation. The third chapter analyzes the main language features of English news from three levels, namely, lexics, syntactics and discourse, which establishes the language foundation for news translation. The fourth chapter probes into the basic principles for English-Chinese translation of news reports and the two aspects that call for special attention, which provides guidance for the following framing narratives. The fifth chapter is the key part of this thesis.Under the guidance of Narrative Theory,it explores how to translate English news into Chinese catering to target readers' habit of reading. To be more specific, this chapter analyzes the framing narratives in the source text from four parts:temporal and spatial framing, selective appropriation of textual material, framing by labelling and repositioning of participants, and then summarizes some translation strategies available. The sixth chapter makes a brief conclusion, and points out its limitations and prospects for future study. In brief, the quality of English-Chinese translation of news reports plays a significant role in friendly communication and exchanges between China and the rest of the world. The study proves that Narrative Theory can be well applied to guide English-Chinese translation, thus a version that well-suits target readers' habits of reading will be presented.
