Code-switching refers to "the use of two or more language varieties in the same conversation or utterance“.In Chinese English class,it is common for teachers to teach in English and Chinese interchangeably.Therefore,studying the current situation of teachers' code-switching in senior high school is helpful to improve the effect of teachers' class discourse,and is significant for English teaching.Based on socio linguistic and syntactical theories,this survey makes a classroom observation,recording and transcription in a senior high school.220 students were investigated randomly through questionnaire and 4 English teachers were interviewed separately.By summarizing and analyzing the data,this survey explores its types,functions,students' and teachers,attitude towards it.It shows that the types are intra-sentential,inter-sentential and tag switching,in which intra-sentential code-switching ranks first,inter-sentential the second,and tag switching the least.Its functions are teaching,managing and communicating,among which teaching function ranks the first,which includes clarification and explanation,etc.Communicating includes expressing emotion and creating friendship,etc.Managing is the least,which is used to issue instructions.Code-switching is commonly used by teachers,and most students affirmed it esp.in grammar and vocabulary explanation.They think it plays a positive role in English learning and they hope teachers should play an exemplary role in intercultural communication.The result shows that teachers should use code-switching reasonably and appropriately in accordance with students' level and curriculum content.Teachers are not only the demonstration of the target language,but also the participants of learning and teaching,and they should enhance the flexibility of classroom language.This survey analyzes types,functions and students' and teachers' attitude towards code-switching in senior high school English class.We hope that the results will be of enlightenment in the further study of teachers' discourse in class.
