With the rapid development and popularization of Internet in the information era,online dating has become a popular way for modern people to find the ideal mate.Online dating advertisements not only can present relevant information about the mate seeker and the expectation for the ideal partner,but also reflect the cultural value orientation of an individual.As the economy and society develops,the values of people changes.In order to study different cultural values reflected in Chinese and American online dating advertisements,from a cross-cultural perspective,this thesis randomly selects the newly corpus,namely,50 Chinese online dating advertisements and 50 American online dating advertisements from July to December,2017,gives a comparative analysis of different variables involved in the advertising,including appearance,income,occupation,interests,etc,and employs the six dimensions of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension as the theoretical framework to discuss the results of analysis of variables to draw the following conclusions.(1)Chinese attach great importance to core status of family value,while Americans pay more attention to the personal life pursuit.(2)Chinese take the overall factors of the families of two sides into consideration in mate selection,which is the typical high power distance society,while Americans concentrate more on whether share interests and hobbies or not.(3)Chinese are in pursuit of a stable life,while Americans are willing to accept new things and take risks to change.(4)Chinese want to have a clear division of roles in their own family after marriage,while Americans are relatively equal and have no clear division of roles.(5)Chinese are strongly bound by family and social factors in a relationship or marriage,while Americans prefer the pursuit of happiness between two people.(6)Chinese focus on the past and makes demands on the marital status of the ideal partner,while American lays more emphasis on the future.At the same time,with the acceleration of globalization and the collision of cultures of different countries,the cultural differences between China and the United States are gradually fusing mutually.The traditional concept of men’s superiority to women in Chinese society has gradually diluted.The family roles of men and women are interchangeable and the status of them tends to be equal in the family just like the American society.Furthermore,in mate selection,the Short-Term Normative Orientation of Chinese has gradually diluted,and some of Chinese are not extremely mind ideal partner’s marital history just like Americans.Theoretically,the author hopes that,through this study,the thesis can enrich the methods and perspectives of research of online advertisement.Practically,the thesis can make people clearly realize that the differences of dating and marriage values between Chinese and American people,provide some valuable references for people in the selection of dating and marriage,and can be helpful in transnational marriage of China and the United States.
