Toni Morrison is an outstanding American novelist and literary critic in the twentieth Century whose works are widely recognized and extensively read in the history of American literature.She is a writer who takes black destiny as a genre and always concerns the black people,as well devotes all her life to the discovery of the black history and promotes the development of the black culture.Each of her works is the life of black swan song in which has direct relevance with black society,reflecting the author’s profound thoughts on the status quo of the black race,especially the tragic fate of the black women under the double oppression of racial discrimination and patriarchal society.Love is her eighth novel,a work created in her middle age,which integrates into her life experiences and memories with the Bible throughout every detail,meticulously shaped characters,carefully designed plots and so on.Love is infused into hatred,and hatred is filled with love,which pines her hope and concern to the black community and the black women.Love in the name of love where L told about a love and hatred story from nine women with a man in the way of flashback at the Up Beach,loading love with new significance,abounding in implication and expectation,receiving widely appreciation at home and abroad.Since the publication of Love,Chinese and foreign scholars have surged up time and again on researching it from multiple perspectives such as feminism,narratology and postmodernism and so on as well as different ways like the plot,rhetoric and themes,etc.Additionally,as the main method of literary criticism in the twentieth century,archetypal criticism acted on an irreplaceable part in the western literature and the art theory.In Anatomy of Criticism,Frye combined metaphors in literary works with biblical imagery,themes and narrative structures which concluded that there were corresponding biblical archetypal elements almost in every literary work.Love is no exception.However,viewing the researches,exploring Love from the perspective of archetypal theory offered by Frye hasn’t get enough notice.It’s necessary and available to study it form archetypal theory in any times due to the crucial influence of this theory.Therefore,this thesis gives an analysis of biblical archetypes in Love separately from archetypal imagery,themes and narrative structures.This thesis is divided into three parts: an introduction,the main body and aconclusion.The first part is introduction part.It mainly gives a brief introduction to Toni Morrison and her work Love as well as the archetypal theory and literature review of it from scholars at home and abroad for getting research significance.The second part is the main part including three chapters.The first chapter analyzes the archetypal imagery in Love-apocalyptic imagery,demonic imagery and analogical imagery.No matter what kind of imagery,there are certain ways to get redemption,and finally realize it;The second chapter explores the archetypal themes in Love-sin,love and redemption that are the themes of the Bible.People were born with sin,the destined redemption is achieved through the only way-love,and finally everything returns to perfection.The third chapter discusses archetypal narrative structures-the narrative structure of natural circulation and U-shaped narrative structure,which actually reveals the course of achieving redemption in the Bible.Archetypal imagery,themes and narrative structures are the basis of archetypal theory.In this part,every section is linked with each other,though they are independent on the surface.The last part draws a conclusion through the above analysis.Based on the archetypes of understanding and processing of Love,it not only embodies the impact of the Bible on her creation as well as the western literature,but shows that the black are on the margins of society background at that time,only through their own efforts,love and redemption can they compensate for their own suffering.Finally,it concludes the role of the redemption as well as its practical significance and revelation of archetypes,which is a better way to solve conflicts and relieve disparities,then return to happiness and perfection.
