Research On The C-E Translation Of The Tourist Materials In The Three Gorges Region-A Functional Equivalence Perspective

Thanks to the reform and opening-up policy,especially after her entry into the WTO,China has now become a powerful developing country with profound cultural deposits in the world.With the Beijing Olympic Games and Shanghai World Expo being successfully held and the Belt and Road Initiative proposed,more and more international friends are interested in learning about China and Chinese culture,so lots of foreign friends choose travelling in China.The key water control project and migrants project in the Three Gorges Reservoir have drawn lots of attention from public,as a result,the Three Gorges has attracted lots of visitors at home and abroad.So far,travelling in the Three Gorges Reservoir has been regarded as a shot spot along the Yangtze River.The translation of tourist materials is not only the bridge to communicate between languages but also a link between cultures.However,the translation of tourist materials is not so perfect that the goal to attract more foreign visitors and spread culture of Three Gorges can not be achieved.Therefore,it is worthwhile to discuss how to improve the quality of tourist materials translation.Based on Nida's functional equivalence theory and targeted to tourist materials in the Three Gorges Region,this thesis adopts qualitative research method and case-study analysis,trying to answer these questions:1)What functions and characteristics do the the tourist materials have?2)Is it feasible to apply functional equivalence theory to the C-E translation of tourist materials?3)What are the strategies for the translation of tourist materials ?In order to solve these questions,this thesis firstly puts forward the functions and characteristics of C-E tourist materials.Since with informative and vocative function,thetourist materials have some features in the linguistic dimension,i.e.using lots of four-character expressions and rhetorical devices.As for the cultural dimension,lots of culture-loaded words and Chinese poems frequently appear in the tourist materials.And then,the thesis analyzed the translation of tourist materials in the Three Gorges region in detail.Based on these features,the author found that the translation of four-character expressions and rhetorical devices obey the rules of formal equivalence,while the translation of culture-loaded words and Chinese poems can conform to the requirement of functional equivalence.At last,it's proved that it is feasible to apply functional equivalence theory to translation of tourist materials through a number of examples.The translation of tourist materials should be grounded on linguistic equivalence and cultural equivalence under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,through transliteration,literal translation and free translation to achieve its function.In conclusion,it is a difficult job for translators to deal with the translation of tourist materials in the Three Gorges region,so the translators should equip themselves with high-standard professional skills,profound cultural background,expertise knowledge and quite strong sense of responsibility.Only better translation can provide correct travelling information,arouse the interests of foreign tourists,spread the culture of the Three Gorges Region so that the tourists around the world can enjoy the beauty and grace of the Three Gorges.
