A Corpus-based Contrastive Critical Analysis Of The Discourses On National Defense Security

The Korean peninsula is a focus of attention in regional defense security and stays in a state of multi-power interaction and counter balances.Its special geopolitical position depends that the related countries have played a strategic game here.The recent deployment of the Thaad antimissile system by the United States and South Korea has made the situation in the Korean peninsula increasingly grim.This thesis takes the critical discourse analysis theory,Halliday's systemic functional grammar,Fairclough's three-dimensional model,and the Securitization Theory of Copenhagen School as the theoretical framework.It aims to explore and analyze the relation between defense security discourse concerning “Thaad event” in different social cultural contexts and ideology.There are few studies applying Fairclough's three-dimensional model to defense security discourse in hotspots.The author expects to broaden the discourse types and perspectives of the research model and to enrich the application of critical disco urse analysis.The author has taken 35 and 42 texts related to the “Thaad event” on the Korean peninsula as case self-built corpora from the New York Times and C hina Daily respectively.Quantitative analysis based on corpus linguistics and qualitative analysis under the framework of the three-dimensional model criticism conducted a comparative study to further reveal the relationship between national defense security discourse and ideology.The national defense security discourse reflects the characteristics and differences of the ideology of the nation and the people,and that ideology also has a certain influence on the construction and reconstruction of the national defense security discourse as well as the national and public judgments on the practice of national defense security.A comparative analysis of the national defense security is conducted and analyzed based on Fairclough's Three-dimensional Model on three levels including descriptive,interpretative and explanative stages.At the descriptive stage,from the comprehensive analysis of key words,high-frequency words,concordance lines,transitivity,modality,pronouns usage and theme,New York Times and China Daily both support China's identity of playing a mediating role in regional conflicts.New York Times focus on the description and analysis of regional conflicts and contradictions,emphasizing military aspects such as North Korea's nuclear issue and its ambition to develop nuclear weapons,mainly considering on the interests of itself and its allies;By contrast,China Daily is concerned about the harmonious diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and other countries.The point mainly lies in advocating regional peace,stability and balance.It mainly emphasizes China's officially opposition to the deployment of Thaad system in South Korea and other negative effects and problems brought about by Thaad system in South Korea including the regional security,environmental impact,economic crisis,etc.At the stage of interpretation,with regard to the news resources,the quotations of New York Times from experts and scholars are more than China Daily.In the modes of representation,News York Times adopts more indirect speech to expound opinions than China Daily.At the stage of interpretation,the differences in national defense security discourse concerning “Thaad event” between the Chinese and American media lie in cultural diversity,military power,economic development and political and diplomatic policies.Besides,the differences in terms of ideology between the USA and China lie in that America supports the securitization of Thaad issue while China expects desecuritization of Thaad issue.This study can improve the readers' critical reading awareness of national defense security discourse and also provide enlightening significance for exploring the role of discourse and ideology in maintaining the stability of the Korean Peninsula and the influence of national defense security discourse and ideology in the negotiation and conciliation in the strategic game of all parties in this region concerning the Thaad event.
