| David Herbert Herbert Lawrence(1885-1930)is one of the most important novelists in the history of English literature at the end of the 19 th century and the beginning of the 20 th century.At that time,he was also full of controversy due to his bold and authentic description of his works.It was not until three decades after Lawrence’s death that people began to dig out the true meaning of his works.Lawrence devoted a great deal of effort to the study of the damage of human body and human blood to the mechanical civilization under the background of the Industrial Revolution,he published many related works,and he wrote 10 novels and a large number of short and medium novels.Academic circles have always focused on his novels,but his short and medium novels have not been paid less enough attention to.As a matter of fact,Lawrence’s short and medium novels not only have a bright theme,but also show his ability to observe life in these works.Therefore,many critics think that Lawrence has also made higher artistic achievements in this literary genre.FR Lewis has commented on Lawrence’s short stories "mostly high degree of professional proficiency and creative" in "Lawrence and Art"(1956).Based on this,this topic takes Lawrence’s short and medium novels as the research object,and takes the theme research as the breakthrough point,and makes a detailed discussion on his works.This paper is mainly composed of three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.On the one hand,the introduction briefly introduces Lawrence’s life and his short stories,as well as the research achievements of Lawrence at home and abroad.On the other hand,it briefly discusses the English humanistic tradition in the background of Lawrence’s life at the end of 19 th century and the beginning of 20 th century,and the influence of this tradition on his works.The main body of the paper is divided into four chapters.Chapter 1.This paper analyzes the relationship between men and women in the works,and introduces the antagonism and distortion of the relationship between men and women under the background of the Industrial Revolution.With the rapid development of industrial civilization,people lost their rational self-control,and then retaliated and hurt each other.Lawrence reveals the harm of industrial civilization to human nature through the confrontation between the two sexes.Chapter 2.Explore the theme of kinship and role consciousness.According tothe division of family relationship,this paper discusses the relationship between family members from the two aspects of parent-child and sibling,mainly discusses how the relationship between family members is supported by each otherand changes under the influence of mechanical civilization.Through the analysis of these two kinds of family relationships,this paper specifically explains Lawrence’s criticism of industrial civilization and his desire to rebuild the harmonious relationship between people.Chapter 3.Reading the ecological consciousness in the works.This chapter from the perspective of ecological criticism,from the natural ecology,social ecology and spiritual ecology three aspects discussed in detail Lawrence’s ecological natural view.Through the analysis of the "sun","England,my England" and other works,this article expounds the destruction of the industrial civilization to the natural environment and the human nature distorted by it,and analyzes the correct view of ecology and the embodiment of Laurence in some of the short stories.Finally,it is indicated that Lawrence’s prescription for solving ecological problems in civilized society is that human being is a part of nature,only by being close to nature can we obtain the liberation of the spirit and soul and realize the all-round development of our own.Chapter 4.Analysis of cultural conflicts.This paper mainly discusses the cultural blending and collision in Lawrence’s works under the background of the collision between traditional civilization and industrial civilization.According to the degree of people’s closeness to nature,Lawrence’s characters can be divided into "natural person more preferring to seclusion villages)" that belonging to traditional civilization and "civilized person(love big city culture)" that belonging to industrial civilization.Through the contrast between these two kinds of people,Lawrence castigated people’s pursuit of fame and wealth,adored the vulgarity of money,and criticized the apathy and boredom of the high-level people living in the center of the city.They lost the vitality of a "natural person",such as walking dead.The purpose of this chapter is to clarify the psychological distortion and spiritual alienation of human beings under the inducement of money from the cultural level.The conclusion part summarizes four themes,that is,Lawrence’s short and medium novels are full of the pursuit and discussion of human nature.He not only exposed the social reality and condemned the industrial civilization,but also tried to arouse human thinking about reality with various realistic works.Lawrence spread thehumanism color in his works,his thought and brilliancessparkled,and aroused people’s endless thinking and exploration. |
