| As an important part in Systematic Functional Grammar, theme theory has attracted wide attention since Halliday put forward this theory in1960s. Scholars at home and abroad have researched on it. Their research fields cover news texts, literary texts, speech texts.etc. However, there are a few researchers who have applied this theory into company profile. In this thesis, the author chooses profiles of Chinese and Foreign shipping company as research subjects to fill the niche of theme theory in this field.The author collects50company profiles as corpus, including25profiles of Chinese and Foreign shipping company respectively. After labeling and analyzing20samples manually, the data is compared by the statistical tool SPSS. This thesis aims to study theme features in Foreign shipping company and whether there is significant difference in the use of themes in terms of function, complexity and markedness in two texts.The features of theme in profiles of Foreign shipping company are concluded. In terms of function, experiential theme accounts for the majority followed by textual theme and interpersonal theme. Regarding experiential theme, the participant elements dominate, while the process occupies the minority. Conjunctive adjunct as textual theme accounts for the majority. All interpersonal themes belong to modal comment adjunct. In terms of complexity, simple theme dominates and multiple theme occupies the least proportion. The typical order of multiple theme is T-tex+T-exp. Three non-finite forms of the verb as textual theme account for the majority. In terms of markedness, unmarked theme dominates while marked theme occupies the minority. There is no significant difference in the use of meta-themes in profiles of Foreign shipping company and Chinese shipping company. However, a significant difference exists in the use of theme complexity and theme markedness. It is expected that the study in this thesis can provide assistance for reading and writing of shipping company profile. |
