A Report On The Translation Of Brown Girl Dreaming(Part ?)

This is a report on the translation of the second part of Brown Girl Dreaming,a novel by Jaqueline Woodson,which has not been translated into Chinese yet.In vivid poems,she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960 s and 1970 s.The second part of this novel is mainly about her unforgettable life in South Carolina with her grandparents,brother and sister.In this report,the writer describes how to translate these poems from the perspective of relevance theory.Relevance theory is not a kind of translation theory,but it can effectively interpret and conduct translation activities.According to relevance theory,translation is an interlingual communication and an inferential cognitive process.The initial task for translators is to recreate optimal relevance of the source text(ST),which is to achieve the adequate contextual effects intended by the source communicator with the lowest possible processing effort on the part of the target receptor.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One begins with a description of the translation task.Chapter Two introduces the development and notions of relevance theory.Chapter Three describes the process of the translation.In Chapter Four,the writer presents the problems and difficulties of translating these poems from four levels—word translation,sentence translation,stanza translation,and poem translation—and elaborates on how the theory directs the translation.The conclusion chapter summarizes the problems in the study process and some practical experience.
