The Study Between The Criticism Of The "National Character" Of The Modern Chinese Intellectuals And The Western Missionaries' Discourse

Since the 1990's,with the introspection of enlightenment in academic circles,the critical discourse of modern Chinese intellectuals' “national character” as part of enlightenment has also become the object of reflection.From the end of the 90 s to the beginning of twenty-first century,viewed from the perspective of western post-modern and post-colonial theory,the correlation between the criticism of the "national character" of modern Chinese intellectuals and the discourse of Western missionaries has also aroused heated debate due to the one-sided emphasis on the latter.This thesis is divided into three chapters,trying to make a study of the "national character" criticism of modern Chinese intellectuals and the western missionaries' discourse.The first chapter analyzes the relationship between Chinese modern intellectuals and Western missionaries from two levels: direct communication and indirect influence,so as to locate the western missionaries who have influenced the critical discourse of the "national character" of the modern Chinese intellectuals,and do the basic work for the analysis of the latter;The second chapter reviews the "national character" critical discourse of modern Chinese intellectuals and Western missionaries,and then analyzes the interaction between the two;The third chapter is related to some evaluation between the criticism of the "national character" of the modern Chinese intellectuals and the western missionaries' discourse,including the evaluation of the critique of "national character" of Chinese intellectuals,the evaluation of the identity and discourse of the western missionaries,and the evaluation between the criticism of the "national character" of the modern Chinese intellectuals and the western missionaries' discourse.First of all,the critical discourse of the " national character" of modern Chinese intellectuals as the tool of "enlightenment" in China,should be affirmed,together with the influence of Western missionaries on their "otherness".Secondly,the evaluation of the identity and discourse of the missionaries in the West,should be connected with China's "accepting groups",especially the modern Chinese intellectuals,to observe the dual identity of the western missionaries "cultural imperialists" and "Chinese and Western cultural communicators" has been realized objectively;Finally,there is no need to myth about the influence of the western missionaries' discourse on the criticism of the "national character" of the modern Chinese intellectuals.The western missionaries' discourse is only part of the source of the "national character" of Chinese intellectuals,while the modern Chinese intellectuals were influenced by their "otherness",the discourse of the western missionaries were "taken in",based on the difference of Chinese intellectuals personal life experience,educational experience,status expectation and national expectation.
