Quine On Reference

As the representative of America analytical philosophy,the prominent contribution of Quine is that he propagates a language philosophy in a holism context.Compare with those pre-Quine philosophers who treat reference as the basic function of language,Quine`s reference theory is always under the holism context,and under this context to describe the function of reference in our language.That theory is to eliminate the deny that our ordinary language`s function base on reference on the one hand,while acknowledge the value of reference in the theory language.However,that theory faces a dilemma when it meets the private language problem.In one-way Quine can solve this problem by denying that the reference plays a role in ordinary language.Or he can deal with the ordinary language`s reference by use the Tarski`s paradigm.I think this divergence cause by Quine`s “impure language philosophy” motivation,and build on the dogma of divergence between conceptual scheme and reality.
