In recent years, there is an increasing demand for literary translation among people.Compared with other kinds of translation, the feature of literary translation is that:a literary work contains the emotions of the author, and the translator should convey such emotions correctly while translating the literary work. However, after reading the original text, the translator will have his own understanding of the original text, thus affecting the translated text.In addition, different cultural backgrounds will cause the misunderstanding of the translator.Because of the above reasons, the influence of cultural factors on literary translation should not be underestimated. The report is mainly based on the"cultural translation theory"of Susan Bassnett to translate Man and Wife. Most of the works of Wilkie Collins(1824-1889)are created in the middle of the 19~thh century and a majority of his works are related with the social issues in Britain at that time, which were quiet different from the social conditions of China at that time.Because of this,in the process of translating the works of Wilkie Collins, the translator can experience the cultural differences between the Chinese society and the western society, thus proving that the main idea of"maintaining the cultural differences between the source language and the target language"of the"cultural translation theory"is in accordance with the development trend of translation, and the theory is feasible and practical. The translation text of the translation project is a novella, which describes the stories of four young people under the loophole of the Scottish marriage law.The report takes the problems and difficulties in the translation practice as the research objects, and analyzes those difficulties from the perspective of special phrases, sentences and dialect. The report falls into four parts, and the first part is an introduction to the report. The second part is an introduction to the theory, mainly including the purpose of the theory and the relationship between the translated text and readers. The third part deals with some problems in the process of translation and the corresponding solutions. The last part is conclusion, including gains and deficiencies in the translation research report.
