Thomas Mann is the representative of Germany twentieth Century literary realism writer,with Buddenbrooks and Magic Mountain won the 1929 Nobel Prize for literature.Thomas Mann is a humanitarian writer,he created a series of "artists" images in his novel,and he used artists as a special social group to tap into the contradiction between the human's spirit and reality in modern society,expressing their perspective on human beings in modern society."Madness" is a typical feature of Thomas Mann's artist.While the French scholar Michel Foucault,has a systematic interpretation of the theory of madness.Thomas Mann's novel "madness" refers to those artists beyond the ordinary literary and art workers facing the rational life of confusion manifested in literature and art with the strange and lead a fast joke,they use the seriousness of irrational jokes to get rid of life,with a fool type of "madness" to disrupt life.This article takes Thomas mad Artist as an object of study.Combined with the theory of madness,we discuss the types and characteristics of these crazy artists.the reasons for their madness and it's modernity significance.This article is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the four types of "madness" artists:the floater,the clown,the wander and the sicker.And it's mainly analyzes the specific image connotation of the four "madmen" in novels by the novels of Thomas Mann's Artist.The second chapter analyzes the characteristics of the image of the"madness" artist.Foucault's insanity theory,the philosophical origin of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer,and the realistic background of Thomas Mann's "mad artist" are introduced,and the deep philosophical characteristics of the artist's madness image are analyzed.The third chapter studies the causes of the "madness”of the artist.Combined with the analysis of two aspects of subjective and objective factors,the formation of "madness" artists there are three main factors,one is the primary character,including seeking other positive and two class two is overbearing;the environment,including the impact of parents and home environment and the whole society unfair and unjust;three strengthen the typical places,on stage and on behalf of sanatorium.The fourth chapter discusses the significance of Thomas Mann's"madness" artist image.On the one hand,the "madness" artist coexists with the society through self exile,and solves the spiritual predicament.On the other hand,"madness" artists performing the glory of non-rationalism.
