Among all contemporary American writers,Annie Proulx is the first female winner of the Faulkner Novel Prize. She occupies an important position in American literature with her unique writing style and strong humanistic concern. The Shipping News is her second novel, which won the National Book Award in 1993 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year. This novel mainly describes those marginalized people who want to achieve their existential value by making free choices.Due to Quoyle's alienation and agony, the reasons and meanings of his free choices and self-fulfillment are fully explored based on Sartre's existentialism in this thesis.Quoyle has been trapped in the alienated and painful life for too long time, the difficult situation urges him to make changes.Quoyle's free-choices in career and love in Newfoundland make him realize his responsibilities in family and career. After a series of positive actions,Quoyle finally finds his own value, gets the clear understanding of different characters in life and achieves self-fulfillment.This novel has been analyzed from Ecocriticism,Regionalism, and Symbolism by other researchers. This thesis pays special attention to explore positive meaning of this novel based on existentialism, and it appeals to a kind of humanism. It means that people should fight against unfair fate and achieve the real value of their existences, which are exactly what Sartre wants to emphasize in his later period of study.
