Reading is an irreplaceable way of language acquisition.Reading comprehension is an important indicator to evaluate English proficiency.One of the goals of English teaching is to improve students' reading ability.However,there are many limitations of the traditional English reading teaching mode.The boring classroom atmosphere and the dull teaching design lower students' interest in English reading,weaken students'comprehension ability and make students grades dissatisfying.In the Information Age human communicate information in various ways.Language,whether in oral communication or in modern written texts,is no longer the only means of communication.In the 1990s,some Western scholars proposed the theories of multimodal discourse analysis and multiliteracy.They believe that other semiotic resources such as sound,images,video,animation,motion,color,facial expressions,etc.and other means can be used to communicate and contribute to learners' competences.In the past two decades some scholars in our country have introduced and explored the new concept and teaching style,making it one of the highlights in the reform of English curriculum.Although many researches have been done in the field,much emphasis has been put on theoretical discussions and less work has been done on empirical research.In order to keep on carrying out empirical research,this study employed the method of combining theory with practice to explore multimodal reading teaching approach and its application to senior high school English reading teaching.The study lasted five months,and the subjects consisted of 100 students from two parallel classes of No.2 Senior High School of Zhangye.Multimodal reading teaching mode was applied in Class 1,the experimental class,while traditional reading teaching mode based on guided learning plan was applied in Class 2,the control class.To verify the effects of multimodal reading teaching on enhancing students' English reading achievements and reading attitudes,the author conducted some teaching experiments,in which two questionnaire surveys,reading tests and an interview were done,and all the data were analyzed by SPSS.At the end of the research,the author has drawn the conclusion that the application of multimodal teaching approach to English reading teaching scientifically and rationally in senior high school can improve students'reading grades and their attitudes towards English reading effectively.So this study will contribute to the establishment of multimodal teaching model and the curriculum reform in senior high school to some extent,but this study has some limitations and the research questions still need to be further explored.
