Motivation And Relationship's Influence Of The Choose Of Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Strategies

Interpersonal emotion regulation refers to the adjustment of emotions of self or interactive objects in interpersonal interaction.Previous studies suggest that the choose of interpersonal mood adjustment strategy is affected by the motivation,interpersonal relationship between the two sides and personal traits.But there was no research had test when these factors exist at the same time or act in opposite ways,which strategy dose individuals will choose.The purpose of the study was to test the motivation can influence the interpersonal emotion regulation strategies,and the motivation can be changed in different relationships.In Study 1 and Study 2,we use self-reports to measure when fear can promote their scores when faced compute games with avoidance goals,the preferences for induced-fear materials whether would be promote.Study 3 was designed to extend the findings in Study 1 and Study 2.In Study 3 we test whether different relationship would influence the choose of motivation and the strategy of interpersonal emotion regulation.Study 1 and Study 2 showed that people try to regulate the emotions of others in order to pursue their own instrumental goal.Participants who could gain from another participant's avoidance behavior wanted the other to feel fear and wanted to expose the other to more fearinducing stimuli.Participants who could gain from another participant's approach behavior wanted the other to feel happy and wanted to expose the other to more happy-inducing stimuli.Study 3 showed that individuals in different relationship may choose different motivation.In the condition of “strangers”,participants would prefer hedonic motives,in the condition of “low-closeness of relationship”,participants would prefer instrumental motives,and in the condition of “high-closeness of relationship”,participants would prefer hedonic motives.Based on current findings,we suggested that the choose of interpersonal emotion regulation strategy is affected by the motivation,and the relationship can influence the motivation.The choose may be associate with the social functioning.Moreover,researchers may explore the factors that can influence the interpersonal emotion regulation strategy and understand the mechanism of interpersonal emotion regulation.
