Edward Manet was in the transition from classical art to modern art in the 19 th century. He started a brand new language of art without completely abandoning the splendid tradition of classical art.Manet's works not only retained the features of classical painting, but also presented a transitional style toward modern art. This is the epitome of the contradictory status quo of many innovative artists in the 19 th century.Although Manet devoted himself to pursuit the official salon in Paris in his whole life, however,he never participated in the Impressionist painting exhibition, and he still left a great influence on Impressionist painters. This article intends to conduct an in-depth analysis for Manet's artwork Portrait of émile Zola.As a portrait of innovative art,Portrait of émile Zola is discussed how to break through the tradition of classical portraiture in painting techniques, deconstructing the traditional painting form, and using the language of modernity to redefine the meaning of painting. And combines with the life of Emile Zola, the painter,to explain the transformation of Manet's painting style under the impetus from various schools of art and literature current, and analyzes the interaction influence between Zola's naturalist literary style and himself.
