the first part introduces the research results of “Li/Nei/Zhong-Wai” in the academic circles. For example, the origin of range meaning?the study of metaphorical meaning?the study of asymmetrical and cross use.In addition, this part introduces the theoretical basis, research methods and sources of corpus. The second part investigates the asymmetry of the range meaning of the Chinese word “LI/Nei/Zhong-Wai”.The directions of “LI/Nei/Zhong” and “Wai” respectively represent "within a certain limits" and "beyond a certain limit".Their orientation and righteousness are symmetrically related. However, there is a certain semantic bias in“LI/Nei/Zhong”,which results in different degrees of asymmetry between the “LI/Nei/Zhong”and “Wai”.The third part investigates the asymmetry of the Chinese word“LI/Nei/Zhong-Wai” in the metaphorical meaning. The “LI/Nei/Zhong” is more metaphorical than "Wai",which shows that the semantic domain that they can map more and the meaning of expression is more abundant, while "Wai" is relatively poor, thus presenting an asym-metry.Because of the imbalance of internal metaphor,it presents a different degree of asymmetrical relationship between the “LI/Nei/Zhong”and “Wai”.The fourth part: based on the range meaning and metaphorical meanings of the word “LI/Nei/Zhong-Wai”,analysis the asymmetry of the enterchange between the“LI/Nei/Zhong” and “Wai”—from the internal exchange(such as “li-zhong”?”nei/li-wai””Nei-li”)and outside exchange(such as “li-shang”?”wai-qian”)— and give an explanation between the cognitive metaphor and cognitive reference. The last part concludes with a summary of the issues discussed in this article. The author indicates the shortcomings of this dissertation and advanced the direction offurther study.
