The Beckett Trilogy(Molloy,Malone Dies and The Unnamable,)representing Beckett's literary achievements,is the highest achievement of his literary art and has a profound influence on the entire literary world. In this thesis, the author selects one of the most representative works, and mainly uses existentialism and analyzes the sense of responsibility in Molloy. Many authors studied Beckett's novel from different perspectives, such as style, but their significance in the context of history and culture has not been fully explored. From the perspective of existentialism, the author combines the social background of turmoil and unrest in Europe as a whole after the World War ? to analyze the sense of responsibility embodied in Molloy and Moran. The thesis is divided into three parts:an introduction, the main body(three chapters)and a conclusion. The introduction combines the research status of Beckett's trilogy at home and abroad, clarifying the reasons and significance of the topic. The first chapter starts with the topic of the text and uses Molloy's pursue of his mother as the entry point,to expound the beginning of the concept of responsibility. It also analyzes the deep meaning of Molloy's pursuit of his mother.Molloy was persistently searching for his mother.Although in his heart, his mother is filthy, and he was brought to the world by her and began suffering and setbacks. In reality,Molloy hoped to return to his mother's bosom.Mother was the origin of humanity and a symbol of beauty and ideal life.Molloy began his unremitting efforts to return to this kind of comfortable life. The second chapter mainly discusses the development of Molloy's sense of responsibility, taking Moran's pursuit of Molloy as the background.Moran accepted the task of finding Molloy.Although he was under the control by rights,he insisted on his mission. He went through hardships along the way,and finally returned to his home with his crippled body. From the perspective of Greek mythology, the author of this thesis analyzes the sense of responsibility in Molloy explicitly.Molloy's pursuit of Moran was compared with the Greek mythological Sisyphus' day-and-night push. The third chapter elaborates on the sublimation of the sense of responsibility. In connection with the social background at that time, the European society, which had experienced two World Wars, was generally sloppy, negative and pessimistic. The author,Beckett, hoped to actively act and create his own value in this dilemma. This chapter puts the two people in a specific social context and compares Moran and Molloy's sense of responsibility. It also gives new meaning to the theme of responsibility. In the work of Molloy,Molloy and Moran represented the post-World War ? bourgeoisie.Beckett, through the description of the two protagonists, encouraged the people to take active actions and fulfill their obligations. This thesis uses existentialism to analyze Molloy, deepening the understanding of the sense of responsibility.By analyzing the sense of responsibility in Molloy from the perspective of existentialism,we are told that no matter how terrible the external environment is,we must actively assume our responsibilities and hold a tenacious and optimistic mind.Even if we are in a desperate situation,we can't be passive and unrestrained, and we can work hard to get out of trouble. Therefore,Beckett's concerns reflect the desire for positive action.Beckett's Trilogy is not only a disappointing piece of music in the real world, but it has sent out the strongest voice of the times. It has transmitted a generation of people's inner fears and uneasiness. It also allows us to see the struggling living conditions after World War II.Existentialism emphasizes the value of people and encourages people to assume their responsibilities through freedom and achieve their own values, which conforms with the sense of responsibility conveyed by Beckett in Molloy. No matter how the times change, the common are only individuals in society.Only if everyone actively fulfills their responsibilities will the society be more prosperous.
