A Report On The Translation Of Chapter Three Of The New New Left: How American Politics Works Today

Represented by government-employee unions,the New New Left has been emerging as a new political dynamic over the past 40 years.They have been in charge of American politics and economies,which impact on people's livelihood.This translation report is based on the translation practice of Chapter Three of the book The New New Left: How American Politics Works Today.This chapter introduces the development of Wal-Mart in America and how the New New Left,represented by Unions,restrained its development.It provides readers with a new perspective to probe into American economics and politics.The report is composed of four parts.Part One is a description of the translation task,which introduces both the book's author and the general topic of this chapter.Part Two introduces the translation process including the pre-translation,the selection of translation method and proofreading.Part Three is case analysis.With specific examples,this part analyses vocabulary,syntax,cultural and discourse difficulties.For translation accuracy,various skills have been adopted,such as conversion of parts of speech,selection of the meaning of a word,sentence split,restructuring and the loss and compensation of culture-bound words.Part Four summarizes the translation experiences and offers some proposals.Through this translation practice,the present author has realized that the lack of translation skills and background knowledge would lead to poor translation and inefficiency.A qualified translator requires adequate preparation,wide and specific knowledge as well as a good command of both Chinese and English.
