English reading teaching plays a significant role in English teaching of junior high school.Reading as a basic skill can help students increase their language input and improve their English proficiency.Nevertheless,the English reading teaching results are not ideal.English reading classrooms in junior high school are mainly dominated by bottom-up reading model.This teaching method lays emphasis on the explanation of the words,phrases and grammar.Under the guidance of this teaching method,there are still many problems in students' reading process.For instance,students are unable to grasp the general idea of the text and they are lack of the reading motivation.Therefore,it is necessary for teachers to apply a feasible and efficient method to English reading teaching.Cohesion theory is an important component of discourse analysis.This thesis is an empirical research that applies cohesion theory to English reading teaching.The research questions of the thesis are as follows:1.Can the application of cohesion theory in English reading teaching stimulate students' reading motivation?2.Can the application of cohesion theory in English reading teaching improve the scores of junior high school students?This study is carried out in No.12 Junior High School in Wafangdian.And it is conducted from September to December which lasts four months.83 students are randomly chosen as the participants from Class One and Class Two in Grade Eight.Class One is considered as the experiment class(EC),while Class Two is as the control class(CC).The research instruments of this study include the questionnaire,tests,interview and SPSS software.The two classes are given the pre-questionnaire and the pre-test before the experiment.As a result,students from the two classes are approximately at the same level on their reading motivation and their reading scores.During the experiment,the reading teaching method based on cohesion theory is applied in the experiment class and the control class is taught by the traditional teaching method.And after the experiment,the classes are given the post-questionnaire and post-test to investigate whether the application of cohesion theory can improve students' reading scores and stimulate students' reading motivation.Based on the analysis of data,the research findings can be summarized that the application of cohesion theory to English reading teaching can stimulate students' reading motivation and students' reading scores can be improved based on the reading teaching method.Therefore,it is feasible and beneficial to apply cohesion theory to English reading teaching in junior high school.It is expected that the English teachers in junior high school can be enlightened from the results of the study in English reading teaching.
