Subjective education is the main trend of education in the world today,and it is the core of quality education in China.One of the key point of English Curriculum Reform is to advocate autonomous learning.Autonomous learning is not only conducive to improving students' academic performance,but also the basis of lifelong learning and lifelong development for students.Therefore,it is very important to cultivate students' self-learning ability through English teaching,especially for junior high school students.Junior middle school is the best time to cultivate self-learning ability.Reading is an important part of junior middle school English teaching,but classroom reading is far from meeting the requirements of the curriculum standard.Therefore,extended reading in English is also important.In the actual English teaching,the extended reading in and outside the class can not only cultivate students' reading interests,make them master the correct reading methods and form scientific reading skills,but also consolidate the knowledge learned in the classroom,broaden their horizons,active thinking,stimulate the enthusiasm and initiative of learning.In this context,the purpose of this study is to find out the current situation of extended reading in junior high school,and to combine the autonomous learning theory with English extended reading to construct an teaching model,and to improve the effectiveness of English extended reading in Junior high school.There are two research questions in this study: what are the current situation and problems of English extended reading teaching in junior high school? How can we use autonomous learning strategies to develop English extended reading teaching in junior middle school? In order to solve the first question,the author conducted a questionnaire survey at the Quantang middle school in Changsha.To solve the second question,the author analyzes the problem of English extended reading in junior high school according to the results of the investigation.Combining with Gardner&Miller's discussion on autonomous language learning,the author gives some suggestions to students and puts forward how teachers can develop English extended reading teaching,including constructing learner profiles,optimizing the selection of reading materials,teaching reading strategies,developing physical settings and resources,bringing the teachers' guidance into play,and assessing after reading.
