A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of The Interpersonal Meaning In Promotional Videos Of China

With the fast development of multimedia,language is not the only way for people to communication with each other in the daily life.Image,sound,color and other modes and the interactions between them play an important role in communication.As one kind of typical dynamic multimodal discourse,promotional video aims to attract and give positive impressions to different levels of people,so that people will build up the sense of trust with what the video has shown.Five promotional videos of China are chosen as the analyzing material in this thesis,including 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics,World Expo 2010 Shanghai,APEC 2014,the Belt and Road Initiative and G20 2016 China,basing on interpersonal meaning of Systemic Functional Linguistics and interactive meaning of Visual Grammar.It shows that in verbal system,the most commonly used is declarative mood structure,and in modality modal devices is probability,which means the importance of validity and certainty of propositions;also,the videos attempt to influence the attitude and behavior of audience.In visual system,three aspects corresponding to visual grammar are used dexterously for the effective interactive meaning construction.While in the interactions between verbal and visual system,it finds that they complement mutually and work together to the construction of interpersonal meaning with other modes like caption and background music.This thesis also finds that the producers tell Chinese story well and spread the Chinese voice to the world through the differences,changes and innovation in interpersonal meaning construction,production technique and theme selection of the promotional videos.
