The translation material referred to in this project report is selected from EP17,which is worked out by National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards(NCCLS).It introduces the protocols for determination of limits of detection and limits of quantitation;approved guideline. As a reference guide for the experimenters,it will help them to improve the accuracy and reliability of the experimental results, and to provide more accurate detection results for patients.Because the project is a professional medical standard text, the author employed the text type theory which was provided by Katharina Reiss to guide the translation.According to the function of language,Reiss divides the texts into three types, namely informative text, expressive text and operative text. The translation material of this project belongs to informative text, therefore, the translation should focus on conveying content according to Reiss's text type theory. Therefore, the author mainly adopts the translation strategy of literal translation.First, the background, significance and the translation requirements of the project are introduced in this report.Secondly, the author introduced the pre-translation preparation including theoretical basis, translation tools, parallel text and references.Thirdly, solutions of the translation difficulties, which include the translation of abbreviation, name terms and the common words with professional meaning, are recounted by giving some case studies. In the end, experience from the translation project is summarized. From the project, the author realized the significance of background knowledge,Chinese skills and text analysis capabilities for a translator.
