Translation Strategies Of Expressive Text Under The Guidance Of Cognitive Metaphor Theory

For a long time,scholars at home and abroad have applied cognitive linguistic theories to translation studies from different perspectives and have achieved fruitful results.With the deepening of research,cognitive metaphor theory is playing an increasingly important role in translation.According to the current research situation and trends at home and abroad,it shows that the study of cognitive metaphorical translation has displayed great research value and potential.However,the important role of cognitive metaphor in translation has not attracted enough attention.In this thesis,the translator chooses an excerpt from A Minimalist Living Guide by Brooke Burke as the translation material.According to Approaches to Translation by Peter Newmark,the text is classified as an expressive text.In expressive texts,the authors usually use plenty of metaphorical expressions their feelings and thoughts.Therefore,The quality of translation of expressive texts depends largely on how the metaphors in such text are translated.Accordingly,the translator focuses on how the metaphors in expressive texts are translated in this thesis with the aim to providing some reference for the theoretical study of translating metaphors in expressive texts.By means of case analysis,the author draws following conclusions:when translating the image schema metaphors,we are supposed to take smooth writing into first consideration.Thus it is unnecessary to retain these original images in metaphors in translation.There are two types of metaphors in expressive texts,especially the image metaphors,which are full of imagination and creation.So,it is often the case that these kinds of metaphors are retained in translation.In this thesis,the translator mainly adopts three strategies to translate metaphorical expressions:the retention of the original images,the conversion of the original images into the corresponding images in target language and the rejection of the original images in the source text.This thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter One provides the background and significance of the translation project,and describes the translation process.Chapter Two introduces the cognitive metaphor theory,its working mechanism and the guiding role of cognitive metaphor theory in translation.Chapter Three proposes different translation strategies according to different metaphor types in the case study.Chapter Four discusses the implication of cognitive metaphor theory to Translation.Chapter Five summarizes the findings and limitations of this thesis.
