Hunmongjahoe,a Chinese characters textbook,as well as an important document of Chinese and Korean linguistics, had once been widely spread during Joseon dynasty. It was compiled by Choe Sejin,a Joseon philologist.Hunmongjahoe has drawn much attetion of Korean scholars for a long time, while Chinese scholars paid little attetion to it.This paper systematically investigated Hunmongjahoe from the perspective of a Chinese characters textbook. The long tradition of using Chinese characters was essential to the birth of Hunmongjahoe, which showed Choe Sejin's advcanced Chinese level and his unique education concept of Chinese characters. We generally teased out the existing editions of Hunmongjahoe and collated Yesan edition as the master copy of this paper. The mode of explaining Chinese Characters,“Chinese Characters–Meaning–Pronunciation”,set an example for later generations. The colloquial words concluded in attitional explanation provided materials for the vulgarism study of modern Chinese language. The quoted material concluded in attitional explanation reflected the spread of the documents in the early 16 th century. To some degree,Hunmongjahoe made up for the disadvantages of old textbooks like Thousand-Character or Yuhab.Compared with other Chinese characters textbooks,Hunmongjahoe is typical of focusing on concrete characters. The number of characters and the compiling concept are of epoch-making significance.Even to this day,Hunmongjahoe still have much referential value for compiling Chinese characters textbooks.
