Eye Movements Reveal The Influence Of Event Structure On Reading Behavior

When we read narrative texts,such as novels and newspaper articles,we divide the information presented into discrete events according to the obvious boundaries between events.But can our eye movement patterns reflect the structure of events?We can detect the reader to make research on the structure of the event reflects the eye movements during reading,eye movement technology provides a rich set of on-line measurement data in the process of reading the truth revealed indirect cognitive event segmentation.The study consists of two experiments,using eye tracking technique-es to examine the effect of event structure on reading behavior.Before the formal experiment,we evaluated the experimental materials and used the classic event segmentation paradigm.Experiment 1 is a single factor design within subjects.The independent variable is the high and low probability of event segmentation.The total reading time,the first-pass reading time,the first fixation duration,and regression out(in)were the dependent variables.The effects of high and low event segmentation probabilities on reading time and regression out(in)were investigated.Experiment 2 is that two factors intra subject design with event segmentation probability(high × low),working memory(high × low).Experiment 2 is the same as the dependent variable in experiment 1.This study used two experimental group two independent event segmentation data,a group from the evaluation of experimental materials(Experiment 1 used)and a group from the subjects(Experiment 2 used)itself,in order to predict eye movements,and the reading behavior of showing the same effect.Experiment two increased the task of assessing the capacity of working memory.In order to obtain valid data to prove the relationship between working memory and event structure.Findings:(1)With the increase of the probability of event segmentation which is considered as the event boundary,the reading time will be prolonged.(2)The location of the event boundary has very high inter subjectivity recognition,i.e.,consistency.(3)The working memory capacity does not affect the first reading time,but affects the total reading time in the region.The working memory capacity is high,the total reading time is less,on the contrary,the reading time is increased.(4)With event segmentation which is considered as the event boundary probability increases,as to the observed differences in the event boundary with the previous event information with new events become possibility is not easy access to consistent.
