On Introduction And Transaltion Of Foreign Literature:A Case Study Of Everyman's Literature

Cultural activities in Hong Kong in 1950s were under the control of different powers and those received financial support from the US were called as the production of "dollar-offensive culture".Cultural activities,including translation activities,influenced by the American ideology center on the themes of anti-communism and the promotion of American values.However,although financially supported by the US,many literary periodicals,for example,Everyman s Literature seems to be free from the American influence.Therefore,on the basis of a clear description of translation activities in 1950s,this paper attempts to find the reason why there is a gap between the translation activities conducted by Everyman's Literature and the American ideology.This research finds that the introduction and translation of Everyman's Literature is influenced by factors both in and out of the literary system.The patrons provide editors of Everymans Literature a free and flexible environment,which in turn gives editors the possibility to show their ideology and poetics in the selection of translated work.Besides,the interaction between professional readers and non-professional readers participates the translation and introduction of foreign literature,and influence the translation strategy.This paper consists of five parts.Introduction mainly dwells on the research origin,relevant studies on Everyman s Literature,theoretical framework,research questions,methods and innovations.Chapter 2 makes a detailed description on the background of cultural activities in Hong Kong in 1950s and the influence of "dollar offensive" culture on cultural activities in Hong Kong.Chapter 3 gives a detailed description of the introduction and translation of foreign literature in different periods,and attempts to find factors both inside and outside the literary system which influence Everyman's Literature's introduction and translation of foreign literature.Chapter 4 bases on a comparison between some original texts and their translations,and attempts to clarify the translation strategy adopted by Everyman's Literature.Conclusion states the findings,further research possibilities and limitation of this research.
