The Northern Qi Dynasty(550--577)was an extremely short dynasty at the end of the Northern and Southern dynasties, ruling for only 28 years.Northern Qi inherited its regime from the Eastern Wei Dynasty, one of the Northern Dynasties, and likewise its calligraphy was inherited in the same way. However, the calligraphy of Northern Qi,different from that of past dynasties — the Eastern Wei and the Northern Wei,dramatically changed along a short span of 28 years.Such a change was not a correspondingly natural one simply driven by historical progress,on the contrary,it was a sudden change based on artificial “retro” influence, which essentially transformed calligraphic style and fashion, especially the chirography of Chinese characters, while it led to the phenomenon that Zhuan shu(seal script),Li shu(clerical script),Kai shu(regular script)and other script styles blended together at the end of the Northern Dynasties, especially in the Northern Qi.As for such a special phenomenon and its causes, many theorists of the past have stated and studied it,with each individual researcher proposing a different view of their own.Based on their contributions,I initiated my own research, taking into account the latest unearthed information and new discoveries,in order to explain the cause of this phenomenon.By expressing my own point of view,I attribute it to “retro” —the calligraphic styles of the Northern Qi characterized fusion of various scripts, which was developed under the “retro” influence,in terms of both occurrence and embodiment. On the significance of “retro” calligraphy in the Northern Qi Dynasty — especially its influence on the development of Chinese calligraphy history,I have correspondingly investigated and researched to conclude that the calligraphic phenomenon played an important role in developing and transforming the style of Kai shu,in the history ofChinese calligraphy, when its causes even profoundly enlighten current calligraphic creation.
