This thesis is an analysis of the role of Margarita in Mefistofele composed by Arrigo Boito, his only four acts opera that was ever publicly performed. The focus of this thesis rests on Margarita's classic soprano aria—l'altra notte in Fondo al mare, and takes that as an example in order to further study Margarita's characteristics. The role of Margarita has shown a sharp emotional contract as a main trail in this opera. It enriches the content and adds considerable tragedy to this drama. The embedment of Margarita's role is to create major conflicts of dramaturgy through tragedy,so I choose to study the singing method that applies to the famous sorrowful l'altra notte in Fondo al mare in the third act,so to elaborate how to act as a soprano.Based on my singing practice and experience of many years,I first point out the main potential problems that may arise in this aria. Then,I will show a detailed vocal analysis in the regards of structure, emotion, breath, strength, tempo, language, grace note, and coloratura in the singing process. From these aspects we can better understand the inward world of this role.Hopefully this thesis can assist more singers with some suggestions when they perform this opera,in particular when they act Margarita.
