Long before the advent of Ma Shi Wen Tong, many studies on Chinese grammar appeared during 17th to 19th European Sinology.Since China implemented the Chinese promotion strategy in the international context, the research on Western Sinology has gradually drawn the attention of academics. However, the current researches that relate to the characteristics of oral Chinese in these works are still rare.Oral language is the most important communication tool in people's daily life.Studying the characteristics of oral language plays an important role in understanding the development trend of language, improving people's speech quality and training individual's thinking ability. Therefore, this paper took the characteristics of oral Chinese as a starting point, and examined eight representative works of Chinese grammars from the European Sinology during 17th to 19th centuries.Joseph Edkins's A Grammar of the Chinese Colloquial Language and Thomas Wade's Yu-yen Tzu-erh Chi were chosen as the main research literature. The thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter one is the introduction, which mainly introduces the origin of this research, summarizes the relevant results at home and abroad, and then explains the content, steps and methods of the research.Chapter two aims to reveal the evolution of oral Chinese study during 17th to 19th European Sinology, which uses the method of diachronic comparative studies to summarize and sort out the contents about the characteristics of oral Chinese in each book chronologically.Chapter three and Chapter four analyze the typological characteristics of oral Chinese presented in A Grammar of the Chinese Colloquial Language and Yii-yen Tzu-erh Chi from the perspectives of both morphology and syntax.Chapter five is the conclusions and enlightenments.Mainly referring to these characteristics and teaching features during 17th to 19th European Sinology, some valuable improvement suggestions are proposed which are aimed at the problems existing in modern oral Chinese teaching to foreigners and textbook compilation at this stage.
