It has been widely acknowledged that reading plays a crucial role in English language teaching to develop students' language comprehensive competence.According to the English curriculum standard for senior high school,the purpose of English reading teaching is to develop students' intergrating skills in using language.So it is important for students to have a deep understanding of the text from the structure and context.However,the traditional English reading teaching pays too much attention to linguistic forms,such as words,grammar and sentence structures,ignoring the whole comprehension of the text.It is clear that this kind of teaching approach can not improve students' language competence ability.Therefore,it is necessary for English teachers to apply discourse analysis theory into English reading teaching,which is an effective approach to help students understand the text from the whole and improve their reading proficiency.The aim of this thesis is to test the effectiveness of the application of discourse analysis theory in English reading class for senior high school students to arouse students' discourse awareness and improve reading competence and thus develop good reading habits.This research was conducted in No.3 Huining Senior School for 4 months with 90 students randomly chosen from the control class and the experimental class.During the research,the control class adopted the traditional English reading teaching while the experimental class applied the discourse analysis theory.The research instruments include questionnaires and tests.Based on data analysis,it can be concluded that the application of discourse analysis theory is effective to arouse students' discourse awareness and improve students' reading comprehension ability.Therefore,it is necessary to put discourse analysis theory into English reading teaching for senior high school students and make a further study.This thesis can be divided into six chapters.In the first chapter,it mainly talks about the importance and problem of English reading teaching in senior high school,according to the requirement of the English curriculum standard for senior high school,this thesis analyses the current problem of English reading in senior high school and proposes discourse analysis theory to improve students' reading comprehension ability.The second chapter states literature review of discourse analysis theory and English reading from different perspectives,then describes the application of discourse analysis theory into English reading teaching from abroad and at home.In the third chapter,this thesis makes theoretical framework of discourse analysis theory,which presents cohesion,coherence,genre analysis and textual pattern.The fourth chapter is the research methodology.The fifth chapter is the results and discussion of questionnaires and tests including pre-test and post-test.The sixth part is the conclusion of the thesis,namely,the application of discourse analysis theory intosenior high school English reading teaching can effectively improve students' reading comprehension ability.
