English Reading Teaching plays an important part in the language teaching.Reading is the main source of inputting and accumulating the language,and it is also the important stage for developing students' listening,speaking,writing and other basic skills.Traditional teaching method extremely relies on the grammar,the syntactic knowledge explanation and the instruction.While using the traditional teaching method,teachers have divided the whole text into several different linguistic points and then taught these separated language points to students,which ignored the cultivation of the students' discourse ability and the actual improvement of language utilization ability.According to "English New Curriculum Standard"(2003)(i.e."New Curriculum Standard"),students should be qualified with the comprehensive reading ability,including language comprehension ability and language decoding ability.New Curriculum Standard emphasizes the multi-disciplinary knowledge.Students' ability in obtaining,processing information,analyzing and solving questions should be enhanced.Therefore,it is worth discussing how to improve students' reading ability with the discourse analysis.In this thesis,the writer particularly introduces the background of discourse analysis,research objectives,research motivation and significance of the survey.The author tries to use the discourse analysis to improve the students' reading ability and reading speed.The research includes 90 participants from two classes of Grade 2 in No.3 senior high middle school in Weiyuan.In three months' teaching experiment,the experimental group is guided by the discourse analysis teaching method,and the controlled group is guided by the traditional teaching method.The results of the pre-test and the post-test shows that the two groups are equal in reading proficiency before the experiment.After collecting the data,the authors applied the SPSS11.0(Statistical Package for Social Sciences)to the research,as a result,there is an obvious gap between the two groups after the experiment.The average scores in experimental group is greatly higher than that in controlled group.The results of the experiment shows that the discourse analysis is playing a positive role in English reading,and it can also improve students' reading ability and the speed of reading English.
