This thesis focus on the Hangzhou Station of the the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A in the Late Qing Dynasty.According to the period, this thesis consists of 3 chapters, which are establishment, consolidation and new development.Owing to the limitation of the original materials, the activities of Hangzhou station between 1890 and 1911 may get more attention. In this twenty years, there were 4 clues in Hangzhou station's daily work, such as financial crisis, educational work,self-support and cooperation. The self-support was the most hard work, because missionaries preferred to arrange anything in China.Under this model, neither missionaries nor native Christian had been prepared to financial support themselves. In order to settle down the financial crisis, the Board of Foreign Missions of the PCUSA carried out the self-support of the native church. However, this aggressive action led to the protest of native Christians or missionaries. From 1901-1911,the Imperial court had to reform. At the same time, the voice of nationalism had been risen up.Facing this radical change,Hangzhou station choose to cooperate with the Presbyterian church in U.S to develop the educational work.By their working, the Hangchow Presbyterian College was recombined in 1908,whose Chinese name changed to the Hangchow University. This thesis is based on the archives,Years Books and newspapers, such as Foreign Missions Correspondence and Reports:China Mission,1837-1911?The China Mission Hand-Book?A century of Protestant Missions in China? The China Mission Year Book?Chinese Recorder. The thesis consists of 3 chapters:In Chapter ?,My purpose is to describe the establishing of the Hangzhou Station of the PCUSA,to restore the work of John Nevius and David Green. They were itinerants who tried to settle down in Hangzhou. However, this plan was obstructed by the Taiping Movement and the American Civil War.The Hangzhou Station was set up in 1866 and the Boy's Boarding School was moved to Hangzhou in 1867.Hangzhou became the center of PCUSA in Zhejiang. In Chapter ?,I am aim at introducing the activities of the Hangzhou Station between 1867 and 1899.There were three clues in this period, evangelization, education work and the self-support of the native church. The contacts between the Presbyterian missionaries and the Chinese are interesting.Owing to its financial crisis, the Board of Foreign Missions of the PCUSA ordered native churches to financial support themselves. This resolution failed, because it was out of the Chinese reality. In Chapter ?,I plan to introduce the activities of the Hangzhou Station between 1900 and 1911.The policy of the last period was consistent, but full of the new characteristics. The foundation of Hangchow Christian College was one of the outcomes.Under my careful consideration,Presbyterian missionaries of Hangzhou 's measures reflected the radical change of the China in 1910s',Astonished by the Boxers, the missionaries had to adjust their strategies to the Chinese situation. In order to survive the monarchy, the Imperial court decided to take structural reform, while the radicalism called on the revolution.Being glad to see the progress of the China,Presbyterian missionaries suggested to conform the spirit of the time. While facing the increasing nationalism, they appealed to unite or confederation to win the competition. The PCUSA cooperated with the PCUS in educational work, especially in the establishing of the Hangchow Christian College was one of the achievements.
