Adolf Hoelzel was,as were few artists, both an integral part of the old academic order of the nineteenth century and influential in the new abstract movements of the twentieth century. He has had a long career as an artist and theorist. The years of his activity from the 1880's until his death in 1934 span many movements and changes in our concepts of the role of art.The purpose of this dissertation is a demonstration of the fact that Hoelzel's theoretical formulations laid the basis for much of the "primary course" at the Bauhaus. And focus on the importance of his individual role as the creator of a major academic system underlying abstract art.Hoelzel was involved in three separate spheres of activity simultaneously: theory, painting and teaching. His work cannot be discussed in isolation in any of these areas. His theories were put into practice in his paintings and his ideas on teaching were reflected in both his theories and his paintings.
