Abstract: Cursive script in Chinese calligraphy is an exotic flower in Chinese civilization of thousands of years. Its cultural connotation and spiritual characteristics are something our compatriots take delight in talking about. It is not only somewhat similar to Western abstract painting in its rich and unique visual language, but also astonishingly similar to abstract painting in spiritual nature and essential characteristics. This paper deals with the similarities and differences between Chinese cursive script and Western abstract painting through comparison and expounds the significance of its abstract character. It gives an account of the origin of abstraction in the history of cursive script, expounds some common characters of Chinese and Western art in value orientation, spiritual features, visual language and character of action, etc, and proposes further some inspiration contemporary Chinese abstract painting may draw from the art of cursive script.
