This thesis analyses the hidden pain in Giacometti art work through the perspectives of psychology and iconography and examines the psychological changes he experienced, their root causes and the consequent connection between his work and ideological constructs. It also acknowledges the existing body of literature on Giacometti provided by art historians and reflects this author's desire to learn more about the artist as a means of answering the many questions contemporary art poses. There are three parts to this thesis. The first part explores the hidden pain in Giacometti art work as well as aspects that should be taken into consideration when studying his work. The second part primarily focuses on key moments of hidden pain in Giacometti life experiences and how they inspired him to channel their psychological impact into his creative work. The final part examines the relationship between his influence on contemporary art as a whole and individual artists ‘ practice.Giacometti was an artist who is difficult to understand. He claimed that he did not know what is true, but was attempting to approach truth. He was an artist who constantly questioned concepts, challenged traditions and was plagued by self-doubt,which became one of the reasons his works always in an incomplete state. In addition,Giacometti visual art works convey his psyche, which is hard to discern, but hidden in his works, simmering under the surface.Through the analysis of this thesis,it is hoped that ‘this hidden pain' can be used as a key to opening up a new perspective of understanding, appreciation, and interpretation of Giacometti artistic creations.
