A Study Of Inter-subjectivity In Translations Of Byron's Poetry In The Late Qing Dynasty From The Perspective Of Fusion Of Horizons

The thesis intends to take translation of Isles of Greece taken from Byron's work Don Juan in the late Qing Dynasty as the major research subject.It analyzes the inter-subjectivity in translation of this pome from the perspective of fusion of horizons to describe factors that influence the translation process and discuss the effects of translation of this poem on the emergence of China's new poems.George Gordon Byron,a renowned English poet,is known for its romantic poems.Among western poets that are introduced into China during the period of social changes,Byron occupies an important status.At the end of the Qing Dynasty,China's leading intellectuals paid great attention to poetry of Byron and they were especially interested in the Isles of Greece.During the period,four famous translators,Liang Qichao,Su Manshu,Ma Junwu and Hu Shi had translated the poem.Currently,many scholars have conducted research on translation activities concerning Byron's works.However,there are three limitations in their studies.These researches seem to focus on the summary of the translation history of Byron's poem based on existing materials,but a profound analysis of these materials is absent.Some of them overstress the effects of power discourse on poetry translation and neglect influence of other factors on translation process.Third,some studies try to expound on the influence of translation of Byron's work on Chinese literature merely by comparing translations with Chinese literary works.Consequently,the study intends to figure out how Byron's poem is translated and what influence the translation exerts on China's literature by probing into the inter-subjectivity in translating the Isles of Greece.With the study focus transferred from subjectivity into inter-subjectivity in the field of philosophy,the concept of inter-subjectivity is also introduced into the field of translation studies.This helps change the previous text-centerd,author-centered and reader-centered paradigm in translation studies.Nevertheless,there is a lack of independent theoretic basis to study the inter-subjectivity in translation.Therefore,the study attempts to make analysis of the inter-subjectivity relationship between translator,author and readers with the aid of the theory of fusion of horizons so as to discuss the factors that influence the translation process comprehensively.Based on the analysis of the translated version of the Isles of Greece by Liang Qichao,Su Manshu,Ma Junwu and Hu Shi,following conclusions are drawn.The fusion of horizons in the translation process is an embodiment of the inter-subjectivity relationship among the three subjects.The result of translation is also the result of fusion of horizons.The horizons of the three subjects all have effects on the translation result.The translator's subjectivity plays the central role in the process of translation and factors like knowledge structure and aesthetic tastes of the translator will have tremendous effects on the translation.The four versions of Isles of Greece are also the results of fusion of horizons.However,due to restrictions of historical conditions,the translator's subjectivity was given into full play in the late Qing Dynasty.This leads to great deviation of the translated Isles of Greece from the source poem.These translation results then have according influence on the Chines literature at that time.
