Nowadays,the display and evaluation of female bodies can be noticed at any time in daily life.No matter in the interpersonal communication or in the mass media,the discussion of women's appearance,body and even sexual attributes can be found everywhere.This phenomenon of detaching a woman's body,body parts,or sexual attributes from the female individual herself as a purely instrument or value sufficient to represent the female's own value is called sexual objectification.Women in this sociocultural atmosphere,would unconsciously internalize the social standard of appearance and body from the environment or the media as one part of the physical self.As a result,self-objectification would appear in these women.The development of women's self-objectification is inseparable from its sexual objectification experience.Whether it is some appearance discussions and appearance evaluations occurred in interpersonal communication or the emphasis on female appearance and body in the mass media,it will arouse women's self-objectification.After women have sexualized themselves,they will habitually observe and pay attention to their body and appearance characteristics and compare them with the ideal female figure in sociocultural standards,which will result in body shame,appearance anxiety,etc.a series of negative psychological impacts such as body shame,appearance anxiety,etc.which in turn,have a certain impact on women's health,such as depression,eating disorders,sexual dysfunction,and substance abuse.Although most researches on sexual objectification and self-objectification focus on women only,this phenomenon also applies to men in other studies.Most of the current researches on the self-objectification focus on the negative consequences of self-objectification,and rarely put the self-objectification into the workplace for discussion.From this perspective,this study will explore the effect of self-objectification in workplace.In this study,a questionnaire survey method was used to explore 324 employees'self-objectification in a manufacturing company.The results showed that:(1)The level of self-objectification was significantly negatively correlated with job performance,and the higher the individual's level of self-objectification,the higher his/her job performance level.(2)Body surveillance plays a complete role in the mediation of the relationship between self-objectification and job performance.The individual's self-objectification influences the use of the individual's body surveillance strategy,which in turn influences the individual's performance;(3)Cognitive engagement plays a completely mediating role in the relationship between self-objectification and job performance.Individual self-objectification affects individuals' cognitive engagement in the workplace,in turn,affects the individual's work performance;(4)There are chain multiple mediations in the path of effect of self-objectification on job performance;(5)the moderate role of appearance contingent self-worth between the relationship of self-objectification and job performance is not significant.The results of this study show that self-objectification will have a negative impact on job performance,and it will affect the individual's body surveillance strategy,and then make influence on the work engagement,and the negative impact on work engagement will reduce the individual's job performance.
