On Wang Teh-chao's Historiography

Wang Teh-chao is an important historian in twentieth Century China.Because of his unique and rich experience in life,he gradually formed the humanistic feelings of national,world and academic Trinity and the spirit of scholarly research which emphasizes the integration of China and the West.These thoughts deeply influenced a generation of scholars.The academic research on Wang Teh-chao's historiography,and showed the characteristics of uneven research because of the difference of time and space.Therefore,the research space of Wang Teh-chao's historiography have yet to develop,the depth of research has yet to be excavated.In addition to his personal efforts,Wang Teh-chao's achievements in historiography are related to the following two factors: “division and friendship” and “world change and historiography”.In 1934,under the encouragement and support of Shang Zhongyi,Wang was admitted to Peking University and guided by scholars such as Zheng Tianting and Yao Congwu to embark on the road to history.After the Lugouqiao Incident in 1937,the Beijing University?Tsinghua University and Nankai University were ordered to move to Changsha and Kunming in the south,and the National Southwest Associated University was formed to maintain culture.The special experience of the “Xiang-Dian-Qian Tour Group” from Changsha to Kunming was greatly explored.Wang's social vision has accelerated the formation of humanistic feelings.After graduating from the Southwestern United University in 1938,Wang has worked as a middle school teacher,newspaper editor,and university professor.He has fellowships with the famous such as Wen Yiduo,Yan Kejia,Lv Ying,Tang Enbo.In particular,he used pen to inform the country and vigorously encouraged the patriotic morale,making the patriotic feelings sublime to the greatest extent possible in the national crisis.Since then,Wang has broken through the traditional historian's ideology of "literature and literacy" in the relationship between the state,academics,and individuals.It evolved into the humanistic sentiment of "a total of academics in the homeland and the world." In 1948,Wang went to the Taiwan Normal University to teach Western history and Historiography.Later,in the process of understanding with the famous historian Guo Tingyi,he turned to studies of modern Chinese history.In 1955,Wang studied under the authority of Professor Brinton,who was the authoritative history of Harvard University,and Embarked on the road to studying the history of ideas.In 1966,he taught the history department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and opened the door to study modern history in Hong Kong.Combined with the edification of Chinese and Western historiography in the 20 th century,Wang Teh-chao's spirit of combining Chinese and Western historiography with the same furnace became a great success.The humanistic feelings and the spirit of integration have become the two keys to Wang Teh-chao's history,and his scholarship transcends China and the West,paying special attention to Chinese historical and cultural studies.In his study of Ming and Qing dynasties,he paid more attention to the relationship between the dynasty system and the rise and fall of society in order to provide a historical reference for reality.In his modern history of China,he paid more attention to the comprehensive study of long-term social structural evolution and short-term personnel changes in order to understand the correlation between personnel metabolism and social changes;and he paid more attention to comparison with the West in order to complement each other and promote Chinese culture.While dedicating his research on history,Wang Teh-chao does not forget the role of educator,and trained a number of historical postgraduates from Taiwan and Hong Kong including Wang Ermin,Edwin Leung,Kai Yin Lam,Chen Wanxiong,Prof.S.T.Kwok and Zhou Jiarong.It is worthy of the title of a famous historical master.
