The Swiss German writer Hermann Hesse is a creator who lives trans-century in the background of modernity.In his lengthy creatibsng career,he always holds the symptoms of the epoch's problems,and making literary therapy through displaying and analyzing the personal mental crisis and the social climax.However,this potential meaning inside the Hesse's novel has been enfolded for a long time,the criticism around his novels is frequently confined to individualistic inner reflection but not the transformation and surpassing of his creative idea,let alone the modern therapeutic meaning within the novels.Besides,the domestic evaluation of Hesse's novels is not that good,and the horizon is limited as well.Therefore,by combining the method of phenomenology,the literary therapy theory,the existential psychotherapy and psychoanalysis,this dissertation will explain the covered literary therapy meaning through close reading,so that providing a latest view to unscramble Hesse.On the basis of clearing the entire train of thought for composition,this dissertation utilizes the representation works from Hesse's early,middle and late period of creation as the analytical text to deeply discover the inner message of his novels by examining the therapeutic value in the reception of readers along with the writer's self-curing through creation in the related contents.The whole passage is divided into three parts.The introduction is mainly about the fundamental situation of Hesse and the literary therapy theory,as well as the study methods and value of this dissertation.In the main body part,firstly,we will analyze Hesse's early works such as Unterm Rad and Demian as the principle study object.By facing various existential mood experience to reconcile the conflict between the self-awareness and the rational discipline,this works attempt to find a path to relieve the personal mental crisis.Secondly,Siddhartha and Der Steppenwolf which present as his master work in the middle period of his creation supply a humorous way to face the quarrel of the good and bad in order to restore the bridge between the common custom and the spirit.The pleasure of devoting oneself into music,philosophy and literature,along with absorbing the Oriental culture is highly recommended,too.Still,these approaches are not the radical solution to the problem,but the conclusion is the inner pace could resolve the mental crisis to some degree.Thirdly,Hesse's Narziss und Goldmund and Das Glasperlenspiel in his late age prove that only dedicating completely into the society is the ultimate way to survive people themselves.The epilogue is a summarization of the entire dissertation.Concerning the social value and the ultimate care meaning of the literary therapy function in Hesse's novel,it is the therapeutic meaning towards the reader and the writer himself together makes Hesse's novel comforting and leads a direction of forward motion of the society.
