| With the development of science and technology and the progress of society,the single modality can no longer meet the needs of era.Texts,pictures,colors,sounds and other modalities increasingly coexist in a discourse.Multimodal Discourse Analysis came into being and provided a new research perspective for scholars to comprehend Multimodal Discourse.Online legal news is a kind of multimodal discourse containing texts and images.The reader needs to have a certain degree of multimodal reading and writing ability to fully decode such news reports.The previous news discourse analysis was mainly limited to the analysis of language texts,and ignored the function of other modalities in the construction of the overall text meaning.However,with the development of new information and communication technologies,the overall meaning of a text is increasingly constructed by linguistic modalities and other non-linguistic modalities.Based on Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics and Kress and van Leeuwen's Visual Grammar,this thesis selects online legal news as research object.From the domestic website “Legal Network”,40 pieces of news between 2016 and2017 are selected as samples to explore how the words and photos generate its unique meaning,and according to Zhang Delu's theory of graphic relationship,it explores how the two kinds of modalities,words and photos,jointly construct the overall meaning of the text.Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the selected corpora,it is found that in the process of meaning construction,text conveys information to readers mainly through transitive system and declarative mood;there is no direct eye contact between the represented participants and the viewers in the photos;and most of the photos use long shots and horizontal perspectives to establish an objective and equal social relationship with the viewers.As far as graphic relationship is concerned,words and photos in most discourses are in a complementary relationship,that is,words and photos act synergistically to express the author's intention and attitude.This study confirms the applicability of multimodal discourse analysis theory to the study of online legal news,and enriches the research methods of online legal news discourse.Due to the limitations of the author's academic level,this thesis will inevitably have some shortcomings.Therefore,at the end of this thesis,the author also pointed out the limitations of the research and suggestions for further study. |
