The development of modern technology brings forward new requirements for English teachers in senior high school,and traditional language teaching based on a single teaching mode can not meet the current demand of modern students.The appearance of multimodal PPT compensates the gap between demand and reality greatly.However,due to exam-oriented teaching in senior high school,teachers pay much attention to grammar and vocabulary in reading teaching,and the PPT courseware made by them fails to present its multimodality,which may cause a majority of students poor performance and low interest in English reading class.As a result,the quality of teaching is affected to a certain extent.Therefore,based on above situation,the author tried to apply multimodal PPT teaching to Ma Chong senior high school reading class in grade one,aiming to explore the effectiveness of multimodal PPT in improving students' reading achievements and changing the status quo of students' reading learning.Multimodal PPT is a new teaching technique which combines words,images,videos,animation and sounds together,and is conductive to teaching and learning.Based on the theories of multimodal discourse analysis,input enhancement,cognitivism and reading theories as well as the design principles of multimodal PPT and the multimodal teaching mode in reading proposed by professor Zhang Delu(2010)and Dai Peixing(2012)as references,the author made multimodal PPT for each units in textbook and taught reading in a fixed procedure.The whole process of experiment lasted nearly five months.Two parallel classes(N=120)in grade one,Ma Chong Senior High School,were selected as the test subjects.Meanwhile,the author used different research instruments,including questionnaire,test,and interview to make a clear analysis and all the research data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.The research results concluded that the application of multimodal PPT in Senior High School English reading class is feasible and effective.In this thesis,the idea of using multimodal PPT in English reading class is in line with the requirements of New National Curriculum Reform as well as helps to promote students' multilitercy in reading learning.What is the most important is that this method can enhance student's reading interests,activate their performance in reading class,improve their reading abilities,and thus strengthen their reading achievement,as well as provide a good reference to English reading teaching.This thesis may have some limitations because of many factors,but the author hopes that these findings will have direct implications for both academic research and teaching practice.At the end of this thesis,some suggestions also proposed so as to provide more support to further studies.
