A Study On The Negative Transfer Of Huainan Accent To The Acquisition Of English Pronunciation

Nowadays,with the increasing studies on English teaching in middle schools in the language and academia,the transfer of mother tongue has drawn more and more attention,especially in the pronunciation learning that is of great importance in the acquisition of second language.However,since many students have adopted local accents firstly,it is easy for them to be influenced by the accent in learning English pronunciation.Therefore,exploring the negative transfer of local accent to English learning is of great significance in the acquisition of second language in recent years.For English learners in Huainan area of Anhui Province,although some pronunciations in Huainan local accent are similar to the sounds in English,there are still differences in phonetics learning.Based on the transfer theory and second language acquisition theory,the following three questions are studied by contrastive analyses and experiments with EXCEL:1)Does Huainan accent really have a negative transfer effect on the acquisition of English pronunciation?2)In which aspects does the negative transfer occur in terms of the phonetics?3)What measures should the teachers and students take to try to reduce the negative transfer of Huainan accent on the acquisition of English pronunciation?By analyzing the pronunciation of 100 junior high school students whose mother tongue is Chinese with Huainan accent,the author found that some vowels and consonants were actually influenced by the Huainan accent.The study shows that:1)Huainan accent does have the negative transfer on learning English pronunciation.2)The negative transfer of Huainan accent to English pronunciation learning is that some students intend to replace some vowels and consonants in English pronunciation by local accents,which is of a great influence on the learning of English phonetics.3)The above negative transfer effects can be solved more or less by using the strategies such as using the mirror,practicing in group,imitating,accent comparison and so on,which would be introduced in the thesis.Finally,based on the questions raised in the research,some useful suggestions are made during the teaching process to help the learners reduce the negative transfer of Huainan accent to English pronunciation.
