Compliment is a very common linguistic phenomenon which is widely applied with relatively high frequency.In fact,compliment is one of the most common speech reaction in social life,playing an essential role in interpersonal communication,showing certain social values of it.In addition,compliments also play an important role in maintaining the harmonious relationship between people.Because different cultural backgrounds usually make the ways of expressing their praises vary,and any expressing difference from any aspect could easily lead to misunderstandings between the two parties of communication.Therefore,when praising behaviors are performed,we would better to act based on occasions and our own status to speak properly when communicating.Appropriate compliments are able to promote the cross-cultural communication,helping people in different cultures to communicate better so that they may achieve the expected social purposes.This paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which briefly expounds the reasons for this topic,the theoretical background,the goal and purpose of the research,and the status and methods of the research.In the second chapter,the author tried to collect corpus and contrastively analyze the differences between English and Chinese compliments in terms of structure,objects,idioms,topics,and function.The third chapter starts from the perspective of cross-cultural communication and finds the reasons for the differences between English and Chinese compliments.The fourth chapter conducts a questionnaire survey of international students of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology,which shows the common biases and learning situations of western learners in the Chinese compliments study.Based on the results of the survey,opinions and suggestions are came up to improve the foreign Chinese teaching and the teaching materials.The fifth chapter is the conclusion which summarizes the research of this thesis and puts forward the limitation of the study and the prospect of future research.
