Chen Shixu’s Intellectual Series novels focus on the living conditions and spiritual pursuits of the intellectuals in China’s consumption society.It depicts the profiles of the Chinese intellectuals in the 1980 s.His novels shape the vivid intellectual image of both the old and the young,explore the spiritual world of the intellectuals,convey his reflections on the contemporary society and life,and present his hopes and expectations for the future.This paper analyzes the personalities of the intellectuals in Chen Shixu’s novel series,by summing up the pedigrees of the characters,and probing into the reasons for the formation of the intellectuals’ images from external and internal factors.The paper is divided into three chapters,in addition to the introduction and the conclusion.The first chapter briefly introduces Chen Shixu’s life,his experience of writing novels and the intellectual series novels written by him.The second chapter is the image of the intellectuals and the interpretation of the genealogy.Through the scanning of the cultural field and the analysis of the personality spirit of the chara,it divides the intellectuals into five types:The first type guards their spiritual homeland;the second type compromises and walks with the evil;the third type is those who are lost and degenerate;the fourth type is those who are awakened and try to change;The fifth type betrays and fights.The third chapter explores the reasons for the image of intellectuals in Chen Shixu ‘ novels from the following aspects: the impact of the consumer society and the hereditary of the spiritual trandition;the influence of western creative thoughts and the writer’mentality.
