| Internet sets up a virtual communication stage and thus brings out netspeak,a new language variety.Being different from natural language,netspeak always breaks conventional language rules and generates fuzziness in communication.Adaptation Theory holds that three properties of language,namely,variability,negotiability and adaptability,are responsible for choice making.Adaptability is concerned with the purpose of language use,while the other two matters great to the way of language choice.Prototype Theory makes categorization a cognitive activity and insists that boundaries of categories are fuzzy.As for Relevance Theory,it thinks the principle of relevance is the basis of utterance interpretation.The thesis proposes three research questions: first,how does netspeak fuzziness embody? Second,what are the pragmatic functions of netspeak fuzziness? Third,how to construct pragmatic and cognitive model of netspeak fuzziness? From pragmatic and cognitive perspectives,the thesis analyzes netspeak's pragmatic and cognitive process to construct a model of netspeak fuzziness by combining Adaptation Theory,Prototype Theory and Relevance Theory.Systematic literature analysis,qualitative and quantitative analysis and corpus-based approach are adopted to study research questions.The thesis finds that netspeak fuzziness is reflected with phonetic variation,morphologic variation and semantic variation.Besides,netspeak fuzziness is a negotiation between language form and function as well as a pragmatic strategy to adapt to communicative purposes.It is helpful for communicators' cooperation and negotiation in dynamic communicative context.At last,the constructed model shows that communication is a integrated pragmatic and cognitive process.Besides,principle of relevance makes the understanding of fuzzy netspeak successful.In conclusion,the constructed model in the thesis broadens research perspectives of netspeak fuzziness and makes contribution to the normalization and application of netspeak. |
