England and Scotland,on the island of Great Britain, have similar linguistic, cultural and geographical conditions. In 1603,England and Scotland realized the union of crown and merged in 1707.But the path of merger has not been smooth.During the process of England's expansion on the island of Great Britain,Scotland as the most difficult object which has been beset England.England's desire for the suzerainty also constantly stimulate the national independent consciousness of Scotland. In 1295,in order to get rid of the oppression of England,Scotland formed a military and political alliance with France,England's arch-rival,and the alliance called the Auld Alliance. The Auld Alliance established a complex triangular relationship between England,Scotland and France. The conquest of Scotland and the dissolution of the Auld Alliance became the goal of the England monarchs.Until the age of Elizabeth ?,England's efforts to completely conquer Scotland ended in failure, war and conflict became the main theme of the relationship between Scotland and England.Yet the outbreak of the Scottish Reformation offers an opportunity for transforming the relationship. The impact of the breach of King Henry VIII and the Pope was a conundrum that the Elizabeth government had to face. The Catholic Scotland could not only be a coalition against religious reformers in the British Isles, but also might even become a base for the whole European Catholic force to invade England. However, with the continuous growth of French forces in Scotland,anti-French sentiment is also rising in Scotland. The Reformation in Scotland was mixed with anti-French sentiment and eventually turned into an anti-French war.Faced with the constant pleas of Scottish protestant and protestant regimes, the Elizabeth government seized the juncture to aid the Scottish protestant. The aid of England not only made the Scottish Reformation succeed, but also successfully collapses the Auld Alliance and solved the 'problem of Scotland' which beset England for many years.England and Scotland have ended centuries of hostility and hatred and ushered in a transformation of relations.
