A Study On The Representation Of Aesthetic Images And Cultural Implications In English Translation Of The Peony Pavilion By Wang Rongpei From The Perspective Of Iconicity Principles

Iconicity is an important part of cognitive linguistics.Linguistic iconicity refers to the mapping between language structure and conceptual structure.According to the view of cognitive linguistics,language form and language meaning are inseparable because the foundation of language formation is human's intuitive experience and cognitive processing of the real world.In recent decades,with the unremitting exploration of scholars at home and abroad,the study of linguistic iconicity has made great achievements,which has become the cornerstone of the interdisciplinary research on iconicity theory.The Peony Pavilion,as a Kunqu Opera,is a special literary genre,which is produced in a specific historical culture and embodies the author's cognition of the objective world.And the extensive application of interjections and onomatopoeias,rhythm and rhyme,parallel structure,reduplicated words,length of lines,exaggerated expressions,intertextuality and metaphors reflects the representation of iconicity principles at all linguistic levels.In addition,multiple iconicity principles may contain in one language phenomenon.Based on iconicity principles,this paper selected Wang Rongpei's English translation of The Peony Pavilion as the analysis text to explore the representation of aesthetic images and cultural implications at the linguistic level of sound,lexicon,syntax and text in his translation version.The case analysis shows that the study on the English translation of The Peony Pavilion under the consideration of iconicity can reflect the mapping between aesthetic images and cultural implications in the source language on the one hand.On the other hand,it can explore how the translation achieves the representation of aesthetic images and cultural implications of the original text,which is the verification of the explanatory power and motivation of iconicity principles.The translation strategies under iconicity principles contribute to the consistency of iconic effects about aesthetic images and cultural implications between the translation and the original text.
