Nineteen Eighty-Four is a long political novel written by the British writer Orwell in 1949.In recent years, there are many related researches of the book, and most researches focus on linguistic and cultural aspects.Few scholars pay attention to the translation methods of the conceptual metaphors in Nineteen Eighty-Four.Therefore,this thesis tries to compare the translation methods of conceptual metaphors in its Chinese translations from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. In Nineteen Eighty,Conceptual Metaphor was proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in the book Metaphors We Live By for the first time, whose main idea is that metaphor is the ontology mapping process from the source domain to the target domain, which can be regarded as a specific and familiar concept to understand and build another abstract and fuzzy concept.Conceptual metaphor is closely related to translation, which can not be ignored in the analysis and comparison of translated texts. This thesis chooses the Chinese translations of Liu Shaoming,Dong Leshan and Sun Zhongxu as the research objects.By analyzing and comparing these three translators' translation methods of conceptual metaphors in the book, the thesis attempts to provide useful inspiration for the translation methods of conceptual metaphors. This thesis chooses three kinds of conceptual metaphors, such as metaphor of nursery rhyme, metaphor of sex and metaphor of politics in Nineteen Eighty-Four,and summarizes their translation methods. The following conclusions are drawn: when the experimental basis of the source language is similar with the target language, the translators have a tendency to adopt the translation methods of literal translation and transliteration;when the experimental basis of the source language is different from the target language, the translators are inclined to adopt the translation methods of free translation and imitation.
